Why a New Advising Model

Our advising approach is intentionally student centered, with a focus on helping MSU pre-veterinary students become competitive, well-informed, and financially prepared applicants to any nationally accredited veterinary program.

National applicant data highlights key realities that you should understand about your chosen career path:

  • Most applicants apply to multiple veterinary schools, averaging about 3.2 applications per student.

  • Reapplication is both common and effective, with many admitted students gaining acceptance during a second application cycle after strengthening their preparation.

  • Residency status plays a major role in admissions outcomes; in-state or contract-seat applicants often have acceptance rates several times higher than non-residents.

  • The financial commitment is significant, with average annual costs of about $58,000 for in-state students and $78,000 for out-of-state students, including tuition and living expenses.

These factors highlight the need for an advising approach that goes beyond course checklists and instead integrate academic planning, financial literacy, hands-on experience, and application strategy.
